Carbon Footprint Analysis Gives Turman Commercial Painters Edge as "Greenest" Painting Contractor
National commercial painting contractor Turman Commercial Painters raises the bar as the industry's sustainability leader with completion of a carbon footprint analysis. This and other measures make Turman the "greenest" commercial painter in the US.
LIVERMORE, CA, December 01, 2010 /Building and Construction PR News/ -- What does Turman Commercial Painters, (http://www.turmaninc.com) a national painting contractor, have in common with Wal-Mart, Intel and Citibank? All are industry leaders in environmental initiatives. Turman Commercial Painters extends its edge as the environmental leader in the painting industry this week with the announcement of its carbon footprint analysis of its 2009 operations. "This carbon footprint report gives us the information needed to identify and achieve further reductions in our environmental impact," says Dave Theobald, President and CEO.
Carbon studies are rare in the construction trades (even a recent study by Groom Energy Solutions, a U.S. firm that helps companies reduce energy consumption, estimated that only about half of the Fortune 500 companies have calculated their carbon footprints) putting Turman ahead in the industry. Turman Commercial Painters completed the carbon footprint analysis as part of an ongoing, multi-pronged strategy to lessen its environmental impact. An Enterprise Carbon Accounting report measures the total greenhouse gas emissions from all operations and includes a breakdown, by percentage, of gases attributable to different portions of the business. In a carbon footprint, typically only Scope 1 ("direct emissions" coming from any company owned entity; including emissions from company-owned vehicles, office heating, and manufacturing) and Scope 2 emissions (those from upstream "indirect emissions" from purchased electricity and steam) are studied; however, Theobald wanting a more thorough report requested that Scope 3 emissions (from upstream "indirect emissions" primarily associated with the value chain - e.g. employee travel, raw materials processing, production, contractor vehicles, purchased services, and logistics) be included as well. To complete the carbon footprint analysis, Turman Commercial Painters turned to Enterprise Carbon Accounting firm Climate Earth, of San Francisco. Says Theobald, "In order to reduce carbon emissions, you first have to understand their source. The carbon footprint report gives us this important information so we can create a bench mark for future studies and take measures that most effectively reduce our carbon footprint - both for our use and to assist clients who are focused on reducing their own environmental impact."
The carbon footprint report is only one of several cutting edge steps Turman has taken that make the organization an industry leader in sustainability. The commercial painting company gives away excess paint to the local communities to reuse and recycle; purchased a special, AkzoNobel water purification system to eliminate the impact on the environment from rinsing and washing equipment; invests in Prius and Ford Transit vehicles to reduce fuel consumption; uses zero or low VOC paints where possible and applies sustainable practices on all jobs; employs web conferencing and limits employee travel to client meetings; uses SharePoint (content management software) to reduce paper use; and purchased Lifesize HD video conferencing in each office to reduce the need for employee travel. "It is in our company DNA to do the right thing - that translates to how we treat our clients, our employees and the environment," says Theobald. "The carbon footprint analysis, continues our commitment to the environment, and is another example of our ideology."
Turman Commercial Painters was founded in 1972 and is the only commercial painting company to provide national services under ONE ownership. Expertise in a wide range of commercial painting services, high quality work and a dedication to integrity and customer relationships are Turman's hallmark.
