Brooklyn Construction Accident Lawyer at The Perecman Firm Calls for More Attention to Worker Training Following Fatal Building Collapse

Construction worker dies after building collapse, improper concrete pouring blamed.

NEW YORK, NY, November 20, 2011 /Building and Construction PR News/ -- One construction worker died and four were injured in a Brooklyn building collapse last week, the New York Post reported.

The accident occurred less than two weeks after a construction worker died when a Bronx building under construction collapsed, noted Brooklyn construction accident lawyer David Perecman.

The Brooklyn building collapse was blamed on improper concrete pouring. The Brooklyn construction accident occurred after fresh concrete was poured on the third floor before the second floor, according to the WSJ. Concrete is normally put down first on the lower floors to fortify a building's base.

"Too many construction workers suffer injuries or are killed due to dangerous work sites, improper training and-or too few safety measures. May widespread exposure of this Brooklyn construction accident help to protect other New York construction workers," said Perecman, the former head New York construction accident lawyer for the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, and a lecturer on construction accident law.

A construction worker for Stillwell Ready Mix, Robert Approbato, said the collapse happened immediately after concrete was pumped from his mixing truck up onto the second floor of the condo complex, reported The New York Times.

According to the WSJ, Approbato said workers were just about finished laying the second floor when "the building just gave way."

Department of Buildings Commissioner Robert D. LiMandri said his department was able to determine that workers "were placing the concrete in the wrong sequence." The Department of Buildings believes this "is a major contributor to this collapse.

Approbato confirmed that workers finished the third floor before he started pumping concrete from his mixing truck up through tubes to the second floor, reported the WSJ.

After the Brooklyn construction accident, two of the workers escaped, another man was visible but trapped, and two other trapped workers were screaming for help, reported the WSJ. Fire officials said one of the men was in cardiac arrest during the rescue.

In the WSJ, LiMandri said his department will be investigating the contractor, superintendent of construction and the engineer. He said investigators will be "taking the wreckage apart piece by piece to do a 'forensic engineering analysis.'"

"We expect to take some action against some of the parties when we know exactly what happened," said LiMandri.

"Safety must come first, because people come first," said David Perecman, a Bronx construction accident lawyer with over 30 years of experience handling construction accident matters. "Getting a job done more quickly or saving a company money are not acceptable excuses for sacrificing worker safety."

Expert Brooklyn construction accident lawyers at The Perecman Firm have handled a number of cases in which construction accidents in New York occurred as a direct result of inadequately trained workers and improper safety practices.
